RECOMMENDED GUNS, CHOKES, SHELLS, AND SHOT SIZE

Most pheasant hunters prefer to use a 12-gauge shotgun. However, 16 and 20-gauge shotguns work equally well with the appropriate ammunition and choke.  Whatever gun you choose, we recommend Modified chokes for early season and Full, Improved Modified, or Modified for late season hunting.  Shooting distances vary depending on the type of habitat being hunted, the time of season, and whether you are walking or blocking.  After opening weekend, Forty to Fifty yard shots are not uncommon while hunting at STECKLEY’S WILD DAKOTA OUTFITTERS.  Therefore, we recommend a 12-gauge shotgun, tight chokes, and the ammunition described below.

12-gauge 2 ¾ inch 1 ¼ ounce 3 ¾ DE #4 or #5 shot in a copper or nickel plated lead

12-gauge 2 ¾ inch 1 3/8 ounce 4 ¼ DE #4 or #5 shot in a copper or nickel plated lead

20-gauge 3 inch 1 ¼ ounce DE #4 or #5 shot in a copper or nickel plated lead
